Fleet Shop Manager

Salary Range: $40.02 - $42.03 hourly
The Town of Brookline is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Fleet Shop Manager to lead and oversee the maintenance and repair operations of our diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. The Fleet Shop Manager provides technical expertise, hands-on mechanical guidance, and team leadership within a fast-paced municipal fleet environment. This position oversees diagnostics, repairs, preventive maintenance, vendor coordination, workflow management, and day-to-day shop operations.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead, coordinate, and supervise all repair and maintenance activities for fleet vehicles and equipment.
• Diagnose and assess complex mechanical and equipment issues; oversee and guide repair processes.
• Manage, train, and support shop personnel; supervise a team of 12 full-time employees.
• Oversee the preventive maintenance program and ensure accurate documentation of work orders, diagnostic data, and service records.
• Monitor and track parts, labor, and operational costs to support budgeting and planning.
• Collaborate with external vendors to manage warranty work and specialized services.
• Ensure all equipment—particularly emergency and seasonal equipment such as snow operations machinery—is fully operational and ready for deployment.
• Maintain compliance with safety regulations, industry standards, and departmental policies.
• Perform related duties as needed to support fleet operations.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a high school diploma, supplemented by technical training, along with at least ten years of comprehensive experience in repairing, maintaining, and overhauling heavy and motor equipment. Strong supervisory experience is essential, as is deep knowledge of mechanical systems, diagnostics, fabrication, preventive maintenance programs, and industry safety practices. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, the capacity to troubleshoot complex issues, proficiency with diagnostic and maintenance software, and the ability to lead and develop a team effectively.
Required Licenses
• Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class B
• Valid MA Hoisting Engineer’s License
