The Town of Brookline's Recreation Department is seeking a highly organized, dependable, and detail-oriented Building Custodian to ensure the cleanliness and safety of our swimming pools and recreation buildings. This role plays a central part in maintaining our facilities while also providing essential support to our community. Duties include monitoring and adjusting pool equipment, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, performing repairs, and keeping accurate records. The role also involves general cleaning tasks such as mopping, sweeping, disinfecting, and replacing necessary supplies. Your work will ensure that our facilities are welcoming and safe for all visitors.

As the Building Custodian, your primary responsibility will be to clean and maintain recreation facilities, including the aquatics center and other recreation buildings. You will oversee maintenance operations, ensure health and safety standards, and perform various custodial tasks to keep our facilities in top condition. You'll also assist with record-keeping, maintenance needs, and other related tasks to support the smooth operation of our recreation centers.

This position offers a competitive hourly wage of $26.88 to $28.25 and a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, retirement pension, and generous paid time off.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Clean and maintain recreation facilities, including aquatics centers and recreation buildings.
  • Oversee maintenance and ensure proper operations at recreation facilities.
  • Maintain health and safety standards, including checking and logging filter pressure, pump pressure, dehumidification pressure, and other readings.
  • Perform pool-related maintenance, such as vacuuming, washing filters, and replacing broken valves, tubing, pumps, and pump heads.
  • Maintain records and log books in accordance with Certified Pool Operator requirements and Department of Public Health licensing.
  • Sweep, mop, and wax lobbies, offices, stairways, halls, and bathrooms.
  • Oversee maintenance at public safety buildings and other municipal buildings.
  • Disinfect facilities, replace light bulbs, pick up and deliver cleaning supplies, remove trash and recycling bins, and vacuum buildings.
  • Follow an established schedule and complete assigned tasks independently.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in various recreation centers and facilities, including aquatics centers, early childhood centers, gymnasiums, rinks, classrooms, offices, and other public buildings.
  • Work may be subject to schedule changes due to weather, special events, and maintenance needs.
  • Occasional outdoor work is required, with some exposure to weather conditions, fumes from standard cleaners, and noise from cleaning and maintenance equipment.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience in custodial and maintenance work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified Pool Operator certification upon employment.
  • Valid Class D Driver’s License.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:

  • Knowledge of cleaning materials and methods.
  • General knowledge of HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical systems, and building maintenance.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and determine the need for maintenance or building repair.
  • Ability to perform basic building maintenance and repair.
